Have you heard the news? CHAC is officially moving this summer! Our soon-to-be new home, located at 590 West El Camino Real in Mountain View, will more than double our usable square footage from 3,408 sq ft to 7,330 sq ft. According to a 2008 study conducted by Hawley Peterson & Snyder Architects, this expansion will accommodate our expanding space needs for the next 20 years!

Over the past decade, CHAC’s annual number of clients served has increased from 1,844 to 11,720. Due to this growth we were in desperate need of more space to provide services, however we lacked the funds to purchase a larger building.

We are referring to the move as the “Miracle on El Camino” because our new building is being donated to us through a trade agreement with the Malek Family of Mountain View who wanted to develop the land our current building sits on. They agreed to swap deeds with us for a building they own only two blocks away from our current Church Street location.

Despite this incredible good fortune, one big challenge remains: While the new building is largely appropriate for our needs, there are several upgrades and renovations required to prepare for the building for our move and future use. The total anticipated project cost is $187,620. We are calling on our friends and supporters to help us achieve this goal by making a one-time investment donation to help renovate/remodel our new building.

We believe that helping youth and their families build external and internal assets is the most meaningful way to protect youth from high-risk behaviors while promoting the positive attitudes, skills and behaviors that will ensure academic and personal success. This new facility will enable us to continue to meet the needs of so many at-risk youth and families for many years to come.

Please consider helping us achieve our goal to be prepared to serve our local community for the next 20 years!

Congratulations to Cole Hamlin, a long-time member of CHAC’s Board of Directors, for being honored as Volunteer of the Year at the Chamber of Commerce Mountain View’s 18th Annual Celebration of Leader’s Awards. Each year, this event recognizes exceptional volunteer contributions and service to the Mountain View Community.

Cole has served as a volunteer member of CHAC’s Board for the past ten years including serving a term as Vice President. As a Board member, he’s recognized for using his strong business savvy combined with his commitment to CHAC’s mission to benefit kids in our schools and families in our community.

Originally from New York City, Cole graduated from Pepperdine University with a MS in Organization Development. As a pioneer in high-tech human resource management he’s held senior positions with several iconic companies. Cole has since retired from a corporate leadership role, however he maintains an active consulting practice in human resources management, organization development and certified career coaching, where he maintains an open door for ‘up-and-coming’ young colleagues in the field.

Cole’s desire to give back to the community began at an early age. While growing up in Harlem, he was the elected youth representative on the Board of Directors of Harlem Youth Opportunities Unlimited ACT in 1964. He worked with the social activism organization to increase opportunities in education and employment for young blacks in Harlem as well as teach residents how to work with governmental agencies.

Since moving to the Bay Area, he’s utilized his human resource management skills to serve as board member and president of the Northern California Human Resource Association, formerly called Santa Clara Valley Personnel Association. He’s also served as Vice President of the board of Casa WOMA, now called “Next Door” an organization that seeks to end domestic violence and promotes safety for battered women and their children. Cole is currently on the board of VTF Services where he first met CHAC’s executive Director Monique Kane, and was introduced to CHAC.

Some of you may also recognize Cole’s name from his performances as a professional jazz musician and the leader of the Cole Hamlin Trio. A professional bass player since his early teens, Cole has performed locally with many top show-business names, and has also donated his musical talents to many charitable organizations, including performing at a few CHAC events.

Kinder Club is a 6-week psycho-educational program that helps Kindergarten students to develop basic social skills. Children meet in groups of four once a week for 30 minutes and learn how to share, appropriately communicate their feelings, encourage each other, and properly behave in a school environment. One of the activities used to teach these skills is the board game Trouble. “It’s not about playing the game, or winning,” Krueger said, “it’s about learning how to be kind, considerate and sympathetic of others, as well as learning to count in English.”

Teachers were immediately thrilled with Kinder Club’s results. “They said it made such a difference,” said Krueger, “it allowed them to focus more time on teaching than babysitting. We’ve run Kinder Club groups every year since.” Last year Kinder Club was brought to San Miguel Elementary. San Miguel Principal Brenda Guy embraced the program so much that she has now made it mandatory for all Kindergarten students to participate.

The article in the Voice features CHAC’s upcoming move to a new building: “This spring, CHAC is planning to move into a building at 590 West El Camino Real that doubles the size of its long-time downtown home.

“We will have twice the space, which we will fill in one day,” said CHAC executive director Monique Kane.

How did a non-profit that has lost funding this year make such an upgrade? An unusually charitable developer bought CHAC the building to make way for a project on CHAC’s property. The Malek Family Foundation is offering a “deed swap” which will be complete any day now.”

The article also discusses CHAC’s successful expansion into the Sunnyvale School District, and our ongoing need to fill the financial gap left from the past year’s funding cuts.

Hi, Julia. Thank you for taking the time to talk to us about CHAC’s Blossom Project. Blossom focuses on preventing teen pregnancies and supporting young families. How are you involved with Blossom?

I am one of the teen moms that Blossom supports. My daughter is 19 months old.

What has made it possible for you to finish high school and head off to college while also being a young mother?

Finishing high school and starting college was really hard with a baby. I’m so glad I found Blossom. Blossom provides me with the guidance and motivation I need to keep going. Dr. Smithmixter and my peers in Blossom help me to be strong so I don’t give up. I also get a lot of motivation from my daughter; when I look at her I know that I have to do this for her.

When did you first learn about the Blossom Project?

I learned about Blossom when I was a junior. Blossom brought a bunch of teen moms to my school to talk openly with students about how difficult it is to be a teen parent. I wish I had seen their presentation that day; maybe I wouldn’t be a teen mom now. Now I’m the one going into classrooms sharing my story. It’s hard to talk about my life in front of strangers, but if I can prevent even one teen pregnancy by sharing my truth than it is all worth it.

What kinds of activities did you participate in with Blossom?

The weekly support group is my favorite. We talk openly about topics that are important to us. Dr. Smithmixter takes the time to listen, and help us. Blossom is a place where we can go to feel safe, to share our hearts, to learn how to care for ourselves and our children. I also go to the weekly psychoeducation groups so I learn a lot about how to live a happier, healthier life. I met Dr. Smithmixter when I was pregnant, she has supported me through a lot.

If you had not found Blossom, what do you think you would be doing now?

Without Blossom I wouldn’t be going to college. I would be working minimum wage, struggling to pay my bills. Feeling unsupported and overwhelmed. That’s hard to think about. My sister and brother are both teen parents too, and neither of them are in college so I can see what their lives are like.

We hear that you are the first person in your family to go to college. What do you plan to study in college? And where do you hope to be in ten years?

Yes! I am the first person in my family to go to college! My mom is really proud of me for being in college. I’m really proud of myself too. I want to be a dental assistant so I am working toward getting into that program at foothill. In 10 years I see myself working in a dentist office feeling good about myself because I am helping people. I really want to work with kids because I want them to feel safe and happy when they are at the dentist.

What advice would you give to other young women (and men) or to other young parents about planning their futures?

Your future is very important. Having a baby isn’t bad but it will stop you from doing what you want to do. Really think about it, it isn’t all fun and games. You can’t be a normal teen anymore, you have to be mature, be an adult before you are ready. Being a teen parent makes EVERYTHING harder. Everything takes twice as long, is twice as expensive, and I never get to see my friends anymore. Protect your future, protect yourself.

Good luck, and thank you so much for sharing your story with us.

I’m happy to help. Blossom has really done so much to help me.

CHAC trauma therapist Brandy Vanderheiden, MFT, SEP, is hosting a fundraising event for CHAC’s FIRST5 Family Resource Center on June 28. She’ll be presenting groundbreaking work by leading trauma experts Peter Levine and Maggie Kline from their book, Trauma-Proofing your Kids, A Parents’ Guide for Instilling Confidence, Joy and Resilience.

This is an important workshop for parents, teachers, childcare providers, or anyone who works with children. It’s also interesting for individuals who want to know more about trauma and the mind-body link.
